The "Habakkuk": the amazing story of a giant aircraft carrier

The Second World War has stimulated many technological advances. But one project stands alone in its scope. Every war gives impetus to the development of science and technology. The Second World War, of course, was the pinnacle in the history of military technology. In addition to hundreds of thousands of the most various innovations, which gave a powerful impetus to the development of military industry during the war developed a lot of the most imaginative projects that for various reasons have not been brought to its logical conclusion.

Well matched to sizes should be and a command of a giant aeroplane carrier: 404 officers and 3216 mariners.

The design also assumed presence of all repair shops and an other infrastructure, i.e. should form independent floating air-force baseline, some kind of military floating island.

The aeroplane carrier of "Avvakum" was a child of British originator Jeffrey Pajka which, by the way, was treated in … to psychiatric hospital and in the same place and worked over drawings and calculations. Naval vessel building needed in total 1,7 million tons pajkerita.

The idea very much was pleasant to the prime minister of Great Britain Winston Churchill. By the way, he has suggested to name an aeroplane carrier by name the antiquated prophet "Avvakumom".

The aeroplane carrier of "Avvakum" intended for patrol in cold waters of Northern Atlantic. It should accompany escorts. However at Quebec conference in August, 1943 an ice aeroplane carrier it has been decided to use in Pacific ocean for war with Japan.

Therefore building of an ice aeroplane carrier have transferred from east coast of Canada on the western. The prototype of "Avvakuma" has been built in the winter of 1943 on loch of the Patrician, Albert's province. It was the small model in length 18, width 9 and altitude of 6 metres. A wood carcase at first have designed on loch ice then it have filled with ice blocks. The refrigerating machinery which banished cold air on metal pipes, were in the central case. The model weighed apprx. 1000 tons and has been built within two months by a team quantity of 15 persons. The chilling system worked normally and allowed to maintain low temperature of ice till the end of summer.

In spite of the fact that prototype building has been recognised by successful and, appear, the design has a future, the economy and the finance has interfered with business.

After Quebec conference the American military men have started to look for at Pacific coast a suitable place for building of an aeroplane carrier of "Avvakum", but it has appeared that it is not enough platforms. Alaska was very farly, and the basic territory of the USA has appeared too warm ice block for building. On December, 16th the special commission which was engaged in searches of a site, has reported on difficulties on the heads. Having familiarised with very high labour cost and assemblage of other problems, chiefs of a headquarters of the USA and Great Britain have decided to refuse the design "Avvakum".

The prototype of "Avvakuma" on loch of the Patrician thawed the whole three years, proving that the idea despite all irreality was not such and impracticable.
