Four parts of the OODA cycle
The first step is to observe the situation in order to build as accurate and complete a picture as possible.
For example, a fighter pilot can broadly and flexibly consider the following factors:
Before Charlie Munger popularized the concept of creating a set of tools from mental models, Boyd advocated a similar approach for pilots to help them better understand the orientation stage within the OODA cycle. He recommended a process of" deductive destruction": pay attention to your own assumptions and distortions, and then find fundamental mental models to replace them.
Similar to using a decision log, deductive destruction ensures that you will always learn from past mistakes and not repeat them. In one of his talks, Boyd used a brilliant metaphor to construct a grid of mental models. He compared it to the device of a snowmobile-a vehicle consisting of elements of several different devices, such as tank tracks, skis, an outboard motor of a boat and a bicycle handlebar.
Individually, each of these items is not enough to move around, but together they create a functional vehicle. As Boyd put it:
4. Act
Let your plans remain in darkness, impenetrable as the night, so that when you move your forces, they will fall like lightning.
