The Israeli-Palestinian conflict: do guns hold their peace?
Material posted: Publication date: 08-08-2014

The Israeli army ceases military operations in Gaza. Tel-Aviv, all tunnels constructed by Hamas have been destroyed. The army leadership claims that the military forces stationed outside the Gaza Strip and took up defensive positions. The big powers of the West continue to support these actions.

At the same time they are not concealing their concern at the deaths of innocent Palestinians, but do not take concrete steps to protect the Palestinians. Major powers in the region only Turkey is taking consistent and decisive action. Diplomatic, political or military activity of other countries in the eye catches. That being said, relevance is the impact of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict geopolitical processes.

The geopolitical maze in the middle East: is there a way out of Gaza?

A new escalation of Israeli-Palestinian relations extremely sensitive to perceived international political circles. Experts believe that the recent events will be limited to the regional scale. Some analysts attribute the harsh military action tel Aviv against the Gaza Strip with changes in the content of global geopolitics. Major world powers have intensified diplomatic efforts to resolve the problem. On June 26, representatives from the U.S., Turkey, Qatar, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and the European Union discussed in Paris this question. They exchanged views on the ceasefire.

But during this meeting revealed the differences. German foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that "Israel's shores are empty" wanted to emphasize the hopelessness of the situation of the Jews. In response, the Minister of foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu said: "the shores are not empty, but full of the bodies of Palestinian children" (see: Bakan Davutoğlu'nu kızdıran sözler / "Habertürk", July 29, 2014).

Media consider this dialogue as a symptom of differences in approaches to the problem of the West and Turkey. Main reason for the intensive Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip and the implementation of subsequent ground offensive they see behind-the-scenes support from the West. The US and European countries in their statements justify the action of tel Aviv. They openly talk about Israel's right to self-defence, but because, in their opinion, Israel had to completely destroy the underground tunnels in the Gaza Strip. These aspects were clearly evident in the statements, in particular, Barack Obama, John Kerry, Angela Merkel and other Western leaders.

It is noteworthy that the Israelis are not satisfied and the position of the West. They were extremely critical of the steps the Obama and Bush.Kerry in connection with the ceasefire. In tel-Aviv, the Western world, led by the US should only act in the interests of Israel. Washington reacted sharply to it. The press Secretary of U.S. State Department Jen Psaki, referring to comments by Israel, at a press conference used the expression "partners and allies can't do that against each other", "we are very sorry about this," etc. (see: ABD Israil'den gelen sert eleştirilere tepki gösterdi / "Anadolu Ajansı", July 29, 2014).

Apparently, here you should pay attention to the contradictions stemming from the dual position of the Western countries. The fact is that when major powers did not Express a firm position, it undermines faith in them at the opposing side. When there is geopolitical and political criterion, attempts to protect any of the parties involved raises many questions. Speaking opasnee, the U.S. tells Israel, "to hit right" and the Palestinians sends the message: "it is wrong that kill civilians".

The situation with political sensibility, described the well-known American analyst Noam Chomsky. He says: "the U.S. is once again betraying the Muslims... Providing Israel with military, diplomatic, and ideological support, they became an accomplice to the deaths of Palestinians... is the Only country that demonstrated against Israel strong will and openly resigned to the injustice, this is Turkey" (see: Chomsky'den Türkiye'ye Filistin övgüsü / "Habertürk", July 25, 2014).

Aforementioned in the background is the UN's position. Secretary General ban Ki-moon, referring to the parties, offered to stop without any preconditions armed clashes. President Barack Obama also spoke with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Italy and stressed the need to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip (see: Obama dan telefon diplomasisi / "Habertürk", July 28, 2014). The leaders of the 5 countries have agreed on an unconditional announcement of ceasefire.

Currently, between Israel and the Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad decided to ceasefire for 72 hours. In Cairo, the parties discussed the provisions of a longer term agreement. But it is difficult to determine under what conditions a sustainable ceasefire after the complete destruction of Gaza by Israel will lead to a complete truce.

Strategic goal: peaceful coexistence or personal ambitions?

In reality, the seriousness of the situation is not measured by the achievement of a ceasefire. Undoubtedly, the activity of that political leaders in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through negotiations, a positive development. But the close connection between the geopolitical, political, diplomatic and military aspects of the process indicates a complex content.

It should take into account the geopolitical and historic ambitions of one country (Israel) and the modern dynamics of geopolitics, interfaith relations, sectarian strife caused in the region after the "Arab spring", the struggle of major powers in the Middle East for influence, etc. factors. In search of an answer to the question "Why has Israel attacked?" the experts are particularly stop to the abovementioned aspects (see, eg.: Vittorio Dan Segre. Nelle vie di Gaza in gioco C'è il futuro di Israele / "Il Giornale", July 22, 2014 and Göktürk Tüysüzoğlu. Israil Neden Saldırdı? / "TUIÇ Akademi", July 20, 2014).

From this perspective it is necessary to emphasize a number of factors. Primarily the reason is that Hamas and Fatah have agreed on the establishment of a government of national unity. This move by the Palestinians, without a doubt has historical significance. Behind this is the fact that after the political collapse of the "Muslim brotherhood" Hamas has remained on the political scene one. This situation has pushed Hamas to turn to Iran, which some time before he moved away (see: Göktürk Tüysüzoğlu. The decree. article).

On the other hand, Hamas is influenced by Turkey and Qatar. It can be concluded that the Muslim organizations want to join together. That's the question that worries tel Aviv. In this context, the experts as the main argument to indicate the message of the Netanyahu government, the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas: "refuse to create a coalition government".

It is known that Muslim organizations in Syria and Iraq in conflicts. They are feuding with each other on sectarian, political and ideological affiliation. "The Islamic state of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) is the even tougher. It is known that this organization knows no limits in killing Muslims. Even the words of ISIS militants "will fight against Israel" now does not seem natural.

The emergence in Palestine of a common ideological front in tel Aviv perceives as the formation of "anti-Israel front". In this regard, he considers the construction by Palestinians of underground tunnels as a threat. That way Hamas gets access to Egypt and to infiltrate Israel.

But it is not everyone that associates the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with the above factors. For example, the French edition "" writes: "Israel fell into Iran's trap" (see: Jacques Benillouche. Gaza: comment Israël est tombé dans le piège de l Iran, via Hamas le / "", July 16, 2014). More specifically, Tehran is challenging the resistance, which can provide tel Aviv the new Iranian missiles.

Italian expert Dan Vittorio Segre emphasizes that "it is not just the middle East conflict: it's a powder keg that can bring the whole world out of balance" (see: Dan Vittorio Segre. The decree. article).

It is obvious that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has become a factor that can have a serious impact in the regional and global geopolitical processes. In the middle East specified place on the political stage organizations based on religious ideology. The West is trying to form anti-democratic image of these organizations. And Association organizations, the Israel perceives as a direct threat to themselves.

All this shows that the geopolitical struggle in the region actually rose to a new level. It can be assumed that the political organization, basing its activities on the basis of Islamic ideology, go to the stage stop squabbling among themselves. Hizbullah even offered Hamas help. These processes can change the geopolitical picture in the region as a whole. So, chaos and uncertainty may increase. But it would be naive to think that major powers are ready to embrace independent activity of Muslim organizations.
