Why would the US want Venezuela and where is China?

Coup attempt in Venezuela, supported by the US, is a new element in the great geopolitical game for control of China. How is it connected?

The main geopolitical confrontation in the world is a confrontation between the US and China. There is direct confrontation in the form of trade wars, there are indirect factors. According to some experts, the support of a coup in Venezuela and the attempt to remove Nicolas Maduro from power - another element of this confrontation.

As you know, Russia is an important source of financial support of the Venezuelan government, providing billions of dollars in loans, some as prepayment for future oil supplies.

But along with Russian support for Venezuela has China, even in large volumes. Venezuela is one of the closest allies of Beijing in Latin America and the biggest recipient of Chinese financing. Only in 2017 China made loans of about $50 billion.

U.S. withdraw some of its diplomats from Venezuela and threaten military intervention if they see a threat to American citizens. In Caracas does not stop the confrontation between supporters and opponents of Nicolas Maduro.

China is the largest creditor of Venezuela, and therefore, ultimately public assets of the country can fall into Chinese hands, as it was in the case of Hambantota port in Sri Lanka.

Clearly, the threat of transfer of assets into the hands of the PRC worries the Americans.

In the interest of Beijing to support Maduro, given that the new government can renege debt of Venezuela to China. Maduro met with Chinese leaders XI Jinping last year and visited the mausoleum of Mao Zedong in Beijing. The countries agreed on new loans in excess of $4 billion and also signed 20 bilateral agreements, writes The Guardian.

It becomes clear that the United States is not trying to help the Venezuelans to achieve "freedom and democracy" and to raise their standard of living, their goal is to complicate life and increase the degree of tension in the confrontation with the main geopolitical rivals of the Empire.

This is especially true in view of the fact that China and Russia are the main initiators of the transition to a new bipolar world.

Why Venezuela is so important for China and Russia? First and foremost, of course, is a natural resource. For anybody not a secret that Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves.

This is mainly heavy oil production which is much more expensive and costly, however, in Venezuela there is a huge potential for energy production.

Below here is a table of countries with indication of proven oil reserves.

Gold is another part of this story.

Back in 2011, when the President of Venezuela was Hugo Chavez, he repatriated 160 tons of gold from banks in the United States and Europe. Is unlikely that this decision helped him to find "friends" in the same America.

But that's not all. Now Nicolas Maduro tries to return the gold to the amount of about $550 million from the Bank of England, rightly fearing that the precious metal will be just taken away because of the sanctions.

Meanwhile, the gold reserves of Venezuela in December almost doubled to 31 tons, when the country returned to the debt of Deutsche Bank in the amount of $1.3 billion where as collateral were gold.

In all countries where the government does not meet American interests, the US is trying to get rid of them. Countries are under tremendous pressure: from economic to military, and experience in Washington is huge.

Also last year, Venezuela started with Turkey payments in gold. It happened because of the imposition of U.S. sanctions, since the international banks don't really want to do operations with Venezuela.

By the way, Calixto Ortega, President of the Central Bank of Venezuela, met in December with representatives of the Bank of England to discuss the issue of repatriation of gold, but could not convince the British to resolve the issue, reported by various sources.

In General, the Venezuelan story has a lot of interesting nuances that do not always lie on the surface, but she is definitely quite more interesting than trying to apply the world's media. The United States are not eager to make Venezuela rich and prosperous, rather they are interested in natural resources and, of course, the geopolitical importance of this country.
