"And the battlefield is held in the tanks..."
Material posted: Publication date: 27-11-2016
Even connoisseurs of Russian history, few people know that the tank units and parts at different times were part of the NKVD of the USSR. Most of them were formed in the last pre-war years or in the first months of the war. Their story is quite short: many tanks and crews literally burned in the fire of fierce fighting in 1941-1942. But the tankers fought a truly heroic. The material on these units it is necessary to collect the crumbs. But believe me, it's worth it! For each sheet, each line preserved in the archives of documents – the certificate of courage and bravery, dedication and fighting skill of the tankers internal troops...

On 31 December 1941 at Voronezh began hasty formation of the 8th motorized rifle division of the NKVD. The main strike force of the new connection was a separate tank battalion. In it included survivors of the bloody summer-autumn battles in the Ukraine fighting vehicles and crews tank companies 6, 16, and 28th motorized rifle regiments of internal troops and fighters and commanders of the 91st and 92nd detachments. So the KGB troops formed new tank unit.
By the time of the appearance of the front the battalion had 21 tanks. Cars assembled, as it were, the forest of pine. It is not surprising that in part were already perfectly proved themselves in battle and bringing terror to the Germans the T-34, nimble, agile BT-7, and frankly obsolete T-26, as well as lighter T-38 and T-40, do not pose a serious threat to German tanks. Recall that all of these types of combat vehicles only thirty had cannon-proof booking, the rest were amazed, even 20-mm cannons and heavy machine guns of the enemy.
He commanded a battalion the senior Lieutenant Alexander Balyshev, to do this, the first commander of a tank company of the 6th Lviv infantry regiment of the NKVD. As for the rest of the military, for sure managed to establish the name of only one of them was the adjutant of the headquarters Popova.
Baptism of fire tank battalion of the NKVD passed to the operational control of the 10th armored brigade of the red army took in the second decade of January 1942 in the Kursk region near the town of Oboyan. In that period, in the historical form of the army's armored units appeared the following entry: "the Battalion of the NKVD is well put together as a fighting unit, able to perform all its tasks. The entire staff is persistent, brave, enterprising in matters of military action. Well put together and prepared by separate crews. Repeated enemy attempts to break through the defense on the part of the battalion was always reflected with heavy losses to the enemy. Especially noted good work of the intelligence battalion. Despite the shortage of personnel and materiel, the battalion combat task copes".
Presented in the form, and specific examples of the fighting tank of the internal troops. One of them is truly unique: January 12, 1942 in a battle near the village of Two light tank BT-7 the KGB battalion came out victorious from the battle with three German medium tanks PzI-II. One of the enemy machines the crew of "batashki", skillfully maneuvering under fire, torched the last remaining ammunition armor-piercing projectile. And the other two Nazi tanks put out of action by ramming the drive wheels. Rate the skill of Soviet tankers: Taranis second PzIII, BT-7, kept running, abruptly handed back, quickly turned, aimed at the first immobilized them Nazi tanks, pushed him to the precipice and threw him into the river!
Alas, in the battle for the Oboyan battalion lost six cars. One of the T-38 was ambushed: he was shot from a small-caliber automatic guns and burned along with the crew near the village of Maryino. Two T-26 died in Prokhorovka as a result of German air RAID. Two of the thirty went down for technical reasons and was blown up by the crews did not get to the enemy.
With the beginning of a protracted battle for the Oboyan and Staryy Oskol remaining fifteen machines separate tank battalion command distributed between the 16th infantry regiment of the 8th division of the NKVD and army units included in the task force, the 21st army. All these tanks were burned by the Nazis during the Voronezh-Voroshilovgrad defensive operation of the Soviet troops in the summer of 1942. The archives managed to find some details of the deaths of only seven cars...
Pair the BT-7 was ambushed near the village Wall. The head tank was literally shot at close range by calculation of the anti-tank gun. The second "Batushka" in which out of the encirclement, the commander of the 21st army major-General A. I. Danilov, on a happy coincidence was unhurt: she was able to pick up on armor crew set on fire by the Germans armored fellow and safely slipped the trap.
Six thirty, part of the task force, the 21st army, July 2, 1942, he covered the evacuation and departure of army hospital. Near the village of kobyl'no all of them together with their crews was killed in an unequal battle with twenty-five German tanks.
Description of the battle, made, apparently, according to eyewitnesses, can be found in the historical form of the 8th infantry division: "T-34 tank battalion was rushing from one flank to the other, reflecting the stalking Hitler's tanks, which shied away from them in hand. However, none of our tankers could not be saved. Two of our tank was on fire and three were shot down and froze on the battlefield. Of the last surviving T-34 fire got weaker: he was out of ammunition. The enemy understood this and is all over thirty on all sides. Close range an enemy shell struck the side armor of our tank, and fired it up. But be saved the crew and thought. There was quite a surprise to the Germans: the driver burning machine and pressed full speed and rushed at the nearest Nazi tank. Was followed by the terrible force of the blow, and then a deafening explosion."
Not going to argue, but I think it was the only fire ramming attack in the WWII tank crew troops of the NKVD. Sorry we still do not know the names of the characters!..
In mid-July 1942, the remnants of battered divisions in the battles of the 8th motorized rifle division of the NKVD were transferred to the staffing of the 63rd infantry division of the red Army. How many at that time remained in the ranks of tankmen tank battalion and what their further fate is unknown: in the lists of the personnel transferred to the army connection, details not yet discovered.
But work in this direction continues. And who knows, maybe with time we will be able to tell the readers some names of tank troops of the NKVD and tell them about the selfless courage, bravery and heroism!
