Americans "politely" kicked out of the Black sea
Material posted: Publication date: 15-07-2014

Violation of territorial waters turned to the American cruiser Yorktown and the destroyer Caron shameful defeat of two Soviet patrol and fled back home.

Now for the first time since the USSR in the Black sea are nine military ships of the Alliance. On the background of events in Ukraine, such conduct naval forces NATO does not look like a coincidence. Especially because last time, the increased activity of our Western partners in the black sea basin came in the late 80s, when there was upheaval in the USSR. Then Soviet sailors put Americans "in place", making a maneuver that went down in history as the "Red RAM". Alas, this story has, even if indirectly, to modern Ukraine.

With the coming to power of Gorbachev, the Soviet Union embarked on the path of Perestroika, but it was, as you know, "poluploskosti polotek, polosnost, twilight". Sensing the weakness of the red power, Western countries began to feel the Soviet leadership "for lice", regularly arranging various provocations. Suffice it to recall an unprecedented landing of Mathias rust on red square.

But, it was in the sky, and the sea, American ships were regularly accidentally violate the territorial waters of the USSR. The whole thing tired sailors who made a plan of action in case of another provocation. And she doesn't have to wait long.

In February 1988, the new American missile cruiser Yorktown and the destroyer Caron entered the Black sea. Soviet sailors knew about this in advance, so already in the area of the Bosphorus, the guests met the patrol ship "Selfless" and "SKR-6". Friendly greeting in Russian and English languages, Americans reported that will accompany them in "our Black sea", in order to avoid misunderstandings. Those from the convoy refused, but had nowhere to go.

Provocation expected in the vicinity of Cape Sarych on the South coast of Crimea. So it eventually happened — the area at the Cape was the only place for defiance of the territorial waters of the USSR. Here and should have played the main phase of the operation to prevent the ships of the U.S. Navy in thermody the Soviet Union. Against Yorktown huge with a displacement of 9200 tons, was nominated watchman "Selfless" with a displacement of 3000 tons, as against Caron destroyer with a displacement of 7800 tons — "TFR-6" with a displacement of only 1300 tons.

As expected, when approaching our waters, the Americans to the warnings of Soviet sailors were not responding, replying on the radio that "no offense". In five cables from terved Soviet ships took position for "Nabal".

""What is "bulk"? It's not the RAM in the full sense of the term, and the approach speed at a small angle by the tangent to Borovitskaya object and "polite" his "repulsion", with the lapel from the withstanding of course. Well, the "politeness" — it's how it goes...", later recalled at that time the chief of the black sea fleet, Vice-Admiral Valentin Selivanov. "

Warned about the consequences, Americans continued to go on their course rejoicing, and and showing from the deck of his large cruiser obscene gestures to Soviet sailors who calmly looked upon them with "Selfless". The Americans, laughing, shot the events on photo and video film that in the end only immortalized the feat of the Soviet ships.

Our sailors were aware that at the preliminary briefing was provided that "bulk" should be as hard to cause the most significant damage to the enemy ship.

Right anchors were etched and held in limbo on the anchor chains under the Cluses starboard — high forecastle "Selfless" and dangling anchor had to thoroughly break up the water signposted on Board the American cruiser. Started coming together... at the headquarters waiting for the report on the results.

""Walked on the port side of the cruiser. Broke the launcher rockets "Harpoon". Two broken missile launchers dangling from the containers. Demolished all rail port side of the cruiser. Beat the hell out of the commander's boat. Some places broke the bead and trim the nasal side of the superstructure. Our anchor came off and he drowned," reported with "Selfless" captain II rank, the chief of staff of the 70th brigade of the 30th division of anti-submarine ships C. F. Nikolay Mikheev."

Meanwhile, "TFR-6" went along the port side of the destroyer, cut the rope, broke the boat and broke through the sheathing Board. The Americans, however, continued at the same speed. Then at the headquarters gave the order to repeat the "Nabal", mentally saying goodbye to shoulder straps — tuning of the Ministry of defence waited for repression.

American sailors, however, too time did not lose: Caron changed course and, together with the cruiser began clamping "Selfless" in a vise. In this situation, Nikolay Mikheev ordered to charge reactive bonbonerie installation RBU-6000 antisubmarine bombs and deploy them on the beam on the right and left side respectively against cruisers and destroyers. The Americans saw it, but didn't know that both the installation RBU operate only synchronously. Ticks began to decompress, but on the cruiser Yorktown began preparations for lifting in the air helicopters. A warning that in case of lifting aircraft from the deck they will be shot down, didn't work. The U.S. military were serious.

To help the Soviet seamen came couple of Mi-26, which was fulfilled tasks in the area of Cape Sarich. Chopper hovered over the cruiser, and the Americans were forced to leave their helicopters in place.

By this time about incident it became known to the leadership of the defense Ministry. Sailors were waiting for the dressing... but were submitted to the promotion.

Ships USA, already very battered, meanwhile, has heaved and the next day walked away from the Black sea. The most damage got the cruiser Yorktown, severely damaged: helipad aft of the superstructure and missile launchers "Harpoon".

But within a few years the Soviet Union collapsed, the black sea fleet was divided into Russian and Ukrainian, the 90's brought devastation and here. Patrol ship "Selfless" in 1997, was transferred to Ukraine and renamed in "Kharkiv". Since then, he in the sea never went, was disarmed and sold to Turkey. In 2006 it flooded when towing, probably for the purpose of obtaining insurance. And "SKR-6" cut for scrap in 1990.

But "Red RAM" and how "Selfless" shamed the motto of the cruiser Yorktown "Victory is our tradition" (Victory is Our Tradition), remember the sailors and the us, and overseas. The traditions of our sailors, as it turns out, will be stronger overseas. Yes and Sevastopol, near the banks of which occurred the events described in 1988, are no longer Ukrainian.
