As it became known "Kommersant", the Russian Ministry of defense has lost the last geostationary satellite system detect launches of ballistic missiles "Oko-1" that are part of the system of missile attack warning (early warning system). In 2005 the military called these satellites "hopelessly outdated".

That 71Х6 the last device launched under the code designation "Kosmos-2479" was lost, "Kommersant" said a source in the defense Ministry. According to him, the problem manifested itself early in the year, when they began to fail import the batteries of the satellite. "Conducted all the necessary resuscitation, but to success they have not led," he says. In April the situation became critical: 71Х6 ceased to give the signals and was de-facto out of control. The last of the eight machines of the series was handed over to the military from NPO Lavochkin in the framework of state defense order 2011 — in due time openly declared previous first Deputy defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov. According to "Kommersant", the military satellite cost more than 1.5 billion rubles, and the time of its manufacture was almost two years. And he was going to literally with the world on a string: for completion were used all available spare parts. Expected active life of satellites of this type was estimated at five to seven years, but over five years could hold only two of the eight running since 1991 ("Cosmos-2224" and "Cosmos-2379").

Now the Russian military in the geostationary orbit there is not a single satellite system "Eye-1", although for a good job requires at least two devices. Previous 71Х6 under the designation "Cosmos-2440" was launched on 26 June 2008, however, only worked until February of 2010. According to Kommersant, a high-elliptical orbit of the system "Eye-1" now there are two other machine — 73Д6. They still function normally, but to complete the work, you must have six satellites. In the end, as said the interlocutor of Kommersant in the Ministry of defense, they are able to perform their tasks only three hours a day.

It is noteworthy that in 2005 a senior military did not hesitate to criticize this satellite system. Occupied at that time held the post of Deputy commander of space armies on arms General Oleg Gromov, speaking in the Federation Council, said bluntly: "We can't even recover on-orbit minimum necessary structure of the apparatus of the system of missile attack warning by carrying out spins hopelessly outdated satellites 71Х6 and 73Д6".

In October 2011, the East Kazakhstan region commander General Oleg Ostapenko (now head of the Roscosmos) said that the military would "not update the space echelon and to create a new unified space system" (CEN), which will assume the functions for the prevention of a rocket attack. According to a Kommersant source in the defense Ministry, currently active work on improvement of the Central command post early warning systems at Serpukhov-15 for new tasks. Military also in 2012, he allocated money for the creation of new devices for the TSA, but about what has been done in the field of space echelon early warning system over the past two years, the defense Ministry announced.
