The young generation of Russians, those who in his lifetime did not find the Soviet period, a rather vague idea about the war in Afghanistan.
Cinema and life
The most prominent of these is obtained from the film by Fyodor Bondarchuk "Devyataya Rota", which in the early 2000s became one of the most financially successful Russian films.
However, "Devyataya Rota" laid and extremely unpleasant tradition — a habit of taking real historical facts and put them down on his head.
Fight 9-th company of the movie has little to do with the fight that led to a real 9-th company 345 th guards separate parachute regiment 7 — 8 January 1988. It was not forgotten by the commanders of the units that dies almost completely when performing a task that had no practical meaning. Was a real feat of the Soviet soldiers in harsh conditions decided an important combat mission.
At the end of 1987 it was already clear that the Soviet troops will soon leave Afghanistan. The Soviet leadership headed by Mikhail Gorbachev, who sought to improve relations with the West, were committed to concluding the Afghan war.
While politicians agreed, the military continued to solve the current mission.
Emboldened, the Mujahideen were blocked in Paktia province, the city of Khost, where government troops of Afghanistan. To cope on their own, the Afghans could not. And then the Soviet command has decided to conduct the operation "Magistral", the objective of which was to break the blockade of the Host and taking control of the route Gardez — Khost, which motorcade could provide the city with food, fuel and other vital goods.
By 30 December, 1987 the first part of the problem was solved, and automotive supply convoy went in the Host.
Especially important height
There was no doubt that the Mujahideen will do anything to damage the caravans of supplies. Attacks on convoys on mountain roads is a favorite tactic of the militants of the Afghan war.
To ensure the safety of the Soviet divisions were to take control of the commanding heights on the outskirts of the road Gardez — Khost, not allowing the Mujahideen to carry out their plans.
The height 3234, located 7-8 kilometres southwest of the middle of the road, had to defend the soldiers of the 9th airborne company of 345-th guards separate parachute regiment. 39 paratroopers, led by the commander of the 3rd platoon senior Lieutenant Viktor Gagarin carefully prepared positions for defense. Conducted engineering work with the arrangement of the structures for the protection of personnel and firing positions, set minefields.
"Black storks" attacked
Where and when the enemy will strike a major blow, breaking the track, were unknown. But around 15:00 on 7 January 1988 at the position of the Marines at the height of 3234 showered with mines and shells. Among the Soviet soldiers were first killed and wounded.
Half an hour later the Mujahideen went on the attack. Stormed the height of the "Black storks" — SWAT militants trained by us and Pakistani instructors. According to Soviet intelligence, attacked the altitude of 3234 and Pakistani military personnel from the regiment "Chatwal".
But the Marines of the 9th company was also not born yesterday. This unit was one of the most experienced trained in the units of the Limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
The first attack of the Mujahideen drowned after they lost 40 men killed and wounded.
The militants withdrew to resume the attack from mortars. About half past five in the evening began a second attack, now with a different direction. Marines have done it again.
Deadly Utes Sergeant Alexandrov
Often, feeling that rested in a strong defense of the Soviet troops, the Mujahideen had abandoned their plans. But not in this case. At the beginning of the eighth evening, the enemy launched a third attack on height 3234. The militants kept the heavy machine gun "Utes", the calculation of which commanded a guards Junior Sergeant Vyacheslav Alexandrov.
Just three days before the glory of the soldier was 20 years old. On account of the guy from Orenburg was 10 combat operations, "demobilization" in the spring of 1988 expired its lifespan.
The Mujahideen concentrated their fire on the machine gun, trying to silence him. Sergeant Alexander ordered the two rooms of his calculations to move, and he continued to mow down the ranks of the attackers. The life of a paratrooper broke off a splinter of enemy grenades.
Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 28, 1988, for courage and heroism in the performance of international duty in the Republic of Afghanistan, guards Junior Sergeant Alexandrov Vyacheslav Alexandrovich posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
"Weapons and ammunition..."
Was repulsed the third attack on high, for her fourth, fifth... "Spirits" like frenzy. Despite the losses, despite the fact that artcollections suggests attacking our artillery, they crept closer. 30 meters, 25, 20... the Marines fired at close range, but strength was on the wane. "Give up!" — they were shouting. The answer, they were bullets.
Gunner Andrey Melnikov from his fellow distinguished by the fact that, despite his youth, was a man of family. Tractor of the Mogilev region got married immediately after graduation, the family had a daughter. When the question about military service, Andrew was able if not to completely avoid it, then pass it in a place more peaceful than Afghanistan. But Melnikov from the "hot spot" did not give up.
Behind him were six military operations, and in this battle he delivered to the enemy a lot of problems. Constantly changing position, he was held off the attack until, until the ammunition ran out. When the bullets of the Mujahideen struck him, he fell, managed to prohibit: "weapons and Ammunition..."
Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 28, 1988, for courage and heroism in the performance of international duty in the Republic of Afghanistan guard soldier Melnikov Andrey Alexandrovich posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
The enemy did not pass
About three in the morning began the 12th (!) account attack. In the ranks were five paratroopers, grenades were not, each at two stores of ammunition. To contain the militants, it was just have nothing. Fighters of the 9th company were preparing to draw fire, but this time to help the reconnaissance platoon came under the command of senior Lieutenant Alexei Smirnov.
The scouts managed to push the militants. New attacks followed — gathering dead, the Mujahideen left.
Directly in the battle killed five Soviet soldiers — Vyacheslav Alexandrov, Andrei Melnikov, Andrei Fedotov, Vladimir Krishtopenko and Anatoly Kuznetsov. Sixth, Andrey Tsvetkov, died in hospital a day later. Nearly three dozen Marines were injured, nine of them critically.
Accurate data on the losses of Mujahideen is unknown. Simultaneously, the attacks on the height was between 200 and 300 fighters, for 6-8 people at one commando.
Battle tactics of the 9th company were fully implemented — height 3234 remained under the control of Soviet troops, the enemy was unable to break through to the highway and to prevent the convoys.
In addition to Andrei Melnikov and Vyacheslav Aleksandrov posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, all participants in the battle were awarded orders.
Feat 9 th company has become a legend of the Afghan war legend, which is absolutely no need for the "transformation" that gave her the filmmakers. But apparently in order to portray the courage of Soviet soldiers, you need a special talent, which in the post-Soviet period in Russia is difficult.
