Farnborough-2018: project Tempest
Material posted: Ponomarenko Oleg J.Publication date: 20-07-2018

Monday opened a regular air show in Farnborough. The participation of Russia is practically reduced to zero, and it can be considered as the reasons that and the attention from the national media will be very limited. For example, TASS reported July 16, citing the official representative of the KLA: "the KLA [United aircraft Corporation] "Farnborough-2018" is not involved, neither in the static display or in the business program. Civil project meetings with clients at the level of representatives of the Russian-Italian joint venture Superjet International".

Of course, this does not mean that the events and news related to the show, not interest.

Before turning to the primary novelty of the air show in part combat aircraft, pay attention to the fact that the Americans are making efforts to persuade Turkey to abandon the purchase of Russian anti-aircraft missile systems s-400. Assistant Secretary of state for political-military Affairs Tina S. Kaidanow said that the state Department is negotiating with Turkey for the possible sale of the complex Patriot as an option to meet the needs of the country's anti-aircraft systems, and, accordingly, hoping for the cancellation of the purchase of the Russian system. The material of the TASS (http://tass.ru/mezhdunarodnaya-panorama/5378179) indicates more political motivation, while in Western sources, including FlightGlobal, reflected the opinions of experts, claiming that the risk in the case of acquisition by Turkey of the systems s-400 and the simultaneous acquisition of F-35, the possibilities of Turkey to identify the vulnerabilities of a fighter from the anti-aircraft systems and in the inevitable spread of the data. Recall that Turkey is going to buy 100 cars in variant F-35A, in mid-2018, purchased 14 cars, up to 2022 is planned to 30 fighters. The first fighter was officially handed over on 21 June 2018, but 2020 is not expected the appearance of aircraft in the skies of Turkey. Turkish pilots will develop the F-35 at the air base, Arizona (Luke AFB), while the technicians began training in Florida (Eglin AFB).

Without a doubt, the most interesting event in the field of military aviation was the view of the Minister of defence of the United Kingdom Gavin Williamson full-size mock-Tempest British fighter aircraft. Blog Bmpd notes:

"The key decisions on the possibility of creating promising British fighter needs to be accepted by results of work of Team Tempest by the end of 2020. The program calls for broad international cooperation. Demonstrated June 16 conceptual layout of a fighter Tempest shows a very large twin-engine aircraft, similar in size and partly in appearance to the American Loclheed Martin F-22A - although it is unclear whether the shown screen layout to be relevant to the real image promising British fighter aircraft in 15-20 years. ... full-scale R & d funding for development of the future fighter must be launched in 2025 ... promising fighter needs to reach the stage of the initial operational readiness (IOC) in 2035. Promising fighter to replace part of the British air force aircraft Eurofighter Typhoon, the final removal of which from service is scheduled for 2040."

Will make the reservation on the comparison, it is clear that after the F-22, as you can see now, all the fighters of the fifth generation contain in its appearance features and certain aerodynamic shape. But, for example, in the application of a Delta wing of large area Tempest is the successor to the Typhoon. Some common images of the concept draws attention to the diversity of engines, is conceptually similar to that performed in the domestic su-57, which together with the location of air intakes similar F-22 can indicate an increased internal volume to accommodate fuel and (or) on the inner suspension arms. Dimension if the rating Bmpd true, says that the plane is close in philosophy to modern "crackers" - a large, heavy fighter, capable of solving a wide range of tasks with greater efficiency than lighter fighters.

Mr. Williamson noted that "we are entering a dangerous new era in the development of military Affairs, and our attention is focused on the future." The concept, in my opinion, reflects the need to be more versatile than existing British now, combat platform with a big range and combat load, including for solving problems during expeditionary operations, the superior basic characteristics of the F-35. Economic and technological components of the project, not least the British are in the program of creation and production of the F-35 is the only partner of the 1st level. The cost of each fighter, the proportion of British industry is a considerable 15 %. The lack of large-scale projects in the creation of the fighter will not allow you to retain competence in this area, narrowing rapidly in Europe as a whole, as well as to capitalize on potential sales to other countries. The latter is important – as stressed by Aviation Week & Space Technology, the share of deliveries of military aircraft of the British aerospace industry in the total volume of military exports of the country was in the last decade at the level of 80%, primarily due to contracts with Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Note that the increased British military aircraft in terms of fighters goes in two directions – enough-publicized acquisition of the F-35 and Typhoon modernization program Project Centurion, in which in several stages will be increased strike capabilities of a fighter – among other things, will ensure the possibility of use of cruise missiles Storm Shadow and Brimstone missiles class "air-land" – in connection with the planned decommissioning of March 2019 fighters Tornado GR4. As for the current year great Britain possessed 94 fighter Typhoon, a further 17 ordered, and 40 fighters Tornado GR4 (recent publications indicate the presence in the middle of the year only two squadrons of these aircraft-veterans).

The intrigue lies in the fact that France and Germany join forces for a future European fighter aircraft, but rather platform – future combat air system (FCAS). Preliminary agreement reached in the summer of 2017 was confirmed in April 2018 at an air show ILA in Berlin, June 19, the defense Ministers of the two countries signed a Memorandum of understanding (other sources speak of the agreement of intent, but I think this is not essential), with the French side was zakreplena leading role in the project. The conceptual study should be completed by the end of the year. The experimental sample – the technology demonstrator should make the first flight until 2025 and the commencement of receipt of production vehicles into service is scheduled for 2040 In anticipation of the opening of the Farnborough air show in July 6, 2018, the Executive Director of Airbus Defence & Space hawk Dirk (Dirk Hoke) issued a warning that the presence of several projects the creation of tactical fighters in Europe unsustainable, will lead to dangerous, illegal competition in a limited market (he appealed to the number of orders collected Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab Gripen – 1129 units), and ultimately, the stalling of the European aviation industry "second League". Hawk said, discussed the possible accession of the UK and particularly BAE to the project at a later stage. Remains whether this observation is relevant, the future will show both projects.

Obvious obstacles to the successful implementation of the project of creation of a perspective fighter seem long enough timeline and funding problems. The first problem is officially acknowledged – in fact, in the United States, and it will try to cope. The degree of success can be carefully questioned, given the realities of modern developing complex, integrated weapons systems in the West.

The second problem has two ways of addressing – a significant increase in military spending, for example, to 2% of GDP or slightly above, as required by the United States from its NATO allies, and that is already in progress by individual countries, and up to 3%, or attraction of external financing.

July 17, Aviation Week & Space Technology noted that it is planned to create a Tempest five years ahead of the Franco-German a similar project, and possibly ahead of and American projects. In addition, it draws attention to the fact that the British without much publicity are actively working on developing technologies for the fighter of the next generation with the end of 2015.

As for financing, the same Aviation Week & Space Technology, July 11, pointed to the active cooperation of Britain and Sweden in this area, including the Financial Times about preliminary negotiations about participation in the program is the creation of a promising fighter, and the significant participation of the British aircraft industry in the creation of the Swedish fighter Gripen. In this presentation the Tempest was attended by the delegations of Sweden and Japan. Other possible or prospective partner the edition with reference to the mass media of the United Kingdom called Saudi Arabia, which would be in the interests of the British acquisition program participant with significant financial capacity and the monarchy seeking to diversify its economy in the framework of the strategy, Vision 2030.

So, the plot is. What is the reality?
