2017 - U.S. Authorities begin investigation of three sales: two relative damage to US national security import of steel and aluminium (section 232 investigations conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce with 04/2017) and one investigation against China and its practices that are detrimental to American corporations, particularly the practice of mandatory transfer of technology to Chinese partners (section 301 investigation, conducted by the Office of the U.S. trade representative with 08/2017)
16/02/2018 - the U.S. Department of Commerce publishes the results of section 232 investigations on steel and aluminum, and recommends to the President to raise tariffs.
08/03/2018 - trump agrees with the recommendation of the Ministry of trade and proclaims the increase of tariffs for steel (25%) and aluminium (10%) in connection with the threat to U.S. national security (section 232) for all countries except Canada and Mexico. Measures shall come into force on 23/03/2018.
22/03/2018 - tramp adds to the exceptions to the measures on steel and aluminum Australia, Argentina, Korea, Brazil and the EU. Additional exclusions apply to 01/05/2018, their usefulness will be reviewed.
22/03/2018 - USTR publishes the results of a section 301 investigation, which claims that China's practices hurt American companies. USTR announces dispute against China and additional tariff and investment measures.
23/03/2018 - China announced a "rebalancing" of trade concessions, arguing that, raising tariffs on steel and aluminum, the United States used the usual special protective measure. China intends to suspend equivalent concessions to the United States on 128 products. This is a response to section 232 measures.
26/03/2018 - USA submits a request for consultations with China regarding the practice of mandatory technology transfer. This is the first measure on the results of the section 301 investigation.
01/04/2018 - China applies tariffs at 15% for 120 goods and 25% for 8 goods from the United States for "rebalancing" of obligations in the WTO in response to section 232 measures. The measures come into force 02/04/2018.
03/04/2018 - USTR publishes for public comment a list of products from China, imports of which were up to $50 billion a year. This is the second measure on the results of the section 301 investigation.
05/04/2018 China submits a request for consultations with the United States in the WTO about the list of goods under section 301.
