To 8.30 am on December 11 to the Tehran University, where he was to undergo the farewell ceremony of Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, from all parts of Tehran began to flock to the people. After about an hour, Iranian television announced that to bid farewell to the deceased, it's about a million people. However, after another couple of hours Hossein Ali Amiri, Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran for legal Affairs, called another figure – just participating in the funeral ceremony took about 2.5 million people. The opposition could not miss such a chance publicly and with impunity to show their disagreement with the regime struggling trying to turn the funeral Rafsanjani in a political demonstration.

A number of official media were quick to announce that the grief from the loss of the second most influential politician of Iran, one of the founding fathers of the Islamic Republic, combined company. However, that occurred at the funeral ceremony showed that this is not the case that consolidation – the illusion, the politicization of Iranian society today is at its peak. And even the foreign policy of Tehran is not at all the Iranians is approved. Specific aspects of the funeral ceremony, which was broadcast state channels, on TV, is a kind of signal. And not so much for the Iranian leadership, it is well-informed about the mood of society, how much for external observers.

At the funeral ceremony of the most influential political figures of the Islamic Republic was present almost at full strength. Almost, as there were two ex-presidents political career which was even different, but closely connected with the deceased. Associate of Rafsanjani, Mohammad Khatami, the "father of liberal reforms", participation in public events is prohibited by a decision of the court. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, one of the leaders of the conservative wing, in 2005, against all odds, defeated Rafsanjani in the presidential election, and 2009 – came from the late "Amir Kabir" (as he called Rafsanjani the local mass-media) in a tough confrontation, not found it possible to attend the funeral of his implacable political opponent.

To bid farewell to the father and participate in the mourning ceremonies, the authorities temporarily released from prison of the son of Rafsanjani, Mehdi Hashemi, who is serving a 10-year sentence for financial crimes. Attended the funeral and the daughter of "Amir Kabir", Paese (Faezeh Hashemi Bahramani), which last, 2016, was sentenced to six months imprisonment "for anti-state propaganda".

Participated in mourning ceremonies and legendary Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the "al-Quds", which, together with the deceased during the Iran-Iraq war, he organized the defense of Kerman province. Then they parted ways, in recent years, Rafsanjani actively criticized the Islamic revolutionary guard Corps and its increasing role in the politics and economy of Iran. But at the funeral of Soleimani about this confrontation said guardedly: "In its activities in senior positions, Mr. Hashemi sometimes used various political techniques."

In short, at the funeral, Rafsanjani was very different. Some of them mourned, and some – in the face of eternity chose to forget their differences with the deceased. And another part, dressed up green wristbands, the symbol, as already understood and forgiven for involuntary tautology, "the Green movement", staged a political demonstration. Chanting their slogans so loud that at certain moments the state television, led, as already mentioned, the live broadcast had to turn off the inclusion of the funeral music.

I can not commend filigree consistency of these slogans. At first glance - nothing anti-government, externally neutral "Hashemi, your path will continue!". Then more sharply: "Rouhani, Khatami, condolences!", "Oh, Hossein, Mir Hossein!" (with a hint of under house arrest of the leader of "green", Mir-Hossein Mousavi). Even sharper: "hail to Khatami!", "Our demand – home arrests should be stopped!"

Well, the peak of "Death to Russia!" (Hello from 2009, the year when the same were heard at mass protests of the "green" opposition), "the Russian Embassy is spy nest!"

In a conversation with me this morning, one of the brilliant Iran analysts, expert at the Center for the study of Central Asia and Afghanistan Sayed Mohammad Alisade said:

"The slogans voiced at the funeral procession, proclaimed those groups which virtually have nothing to do with Hashemi Rafsanjani, nor a reformist movement. Even in liberal circles is oriented to the West outcasts who are obsessed with only one idea – to overthrow the existing order, the destruction of the Islamic Republic. And anti-Russian slogans in this scheme, it is only natural that cooperation with Moscow, in their opinion, strengthens existing Iran form of government, denying the opposition chances to win".
