Recently in several sources it is noted that in Russia at full speed there is a formation of Arctic troops. While troops are created mainly with the task of protecting the Northern borders. Therefore, Arctic troops like border, will be subordinated to the FSB, but it is possible that in the future the tasks will be put in a specially created Arctic command of the Russian troops.

The establishment of a separate strategic command for solving problems in the Arctic zone is not yet being discussed, but the scope of the challenges ahead may well be considered as the competence of the strategic command. So, approved by the Russian President back in 2008 the Arctic strategy States that by 2016, this region will turn into a leading strategic resource base of Russia. Given the interest in the Arctic from other States (primarily the United States, Canada, Norway and Denmark), it is possible that it will have to interfere.

Preliminary estimates agree that the population of the Russian Arctic troops will initially be 10 to 12 thousand people. They will put a regiment of Marines, stationed in Murmansk and mechanized infantry brigade based in Pechenga. In addition, the task of border security in the Arctic region will be assigned to reinforced border units, ranging in size from 5 to 10 thousand people.

Experts say that is of relevance to the Arctic is the Northern fleet, which is the operational unit of the Navy of the Russian Federation. Its population is about 45-50 thousand people. In the fleet there is, for example, 536 separate coastal missile-artillery brigade. And one of the points of strategy in the Arctic is "actively functioning system of the coast guard of FSB of the Russian Federation in the Arctic zone".

In General, according to experts, Russia in the coming years will focus in the region to 100 thousand troops, and the administration will go from the Navy to the FSB.

The troops rapidly supplied weapons, specially trained for operations in severe Arctic conditions. Expected new icebreakers, special rockets and small arms.

Characteristically, but in official documents don't have even cost estimates for the strengthening of the Russian Arctic group. But a lot of predictions about the prospects of this region. So, some of them contains about 7% of world oil reserves and up to a third of gas reserves; deposits of gold, diamonds, iron, molybdenum. According to some forecasts, the melting of Arctic snow will occur faster than expected, and after five years it will be possible to start development of these vast reserves.

Recently in a press there were many messages that regional States are drawn into a regional arms race.

Thus, Denmark is planning to create a separate military formation in the Arctic to intensify exploration and production of oil and gas and to declare svom sovereignty over the North pole, according to a draft of its Arctic strategy.

In the new Danish Arctic strategy it is noted that the reserves of oil and gas on the northeastern shelf of Greenland may reach 31 billion barrels. 17 billion, according to estimates, there are on the West coast. Company Cairn Energy has already started filming and was drilled in 2010, three exploration wells.

Planned restructuring of the armed forces of Denmark for the purpose of adaptation to intelligence and action in the Arctic. Arctic command will be created on the basis of existing structures. In addition, it will create an Arctic special forces, prepared to operate in extreme Arctic conditions.

A key element of project strategy is the question of shipping. In the document it is emphasized that navigation in the Arctic, it is necessary to introduce special rules. It is proposed to adopt a mandatory Polar code of navigation, which will be approved by the International organization of navigation.

Interestingly, in addition to the Nordic countries build their icebreakers China and South Korea. UK trains its special forces to "deal with terrorists in the Arctic," and the U.S. Navy are given direct instructions to increase presence in the region.

Meanwhile, to date, the most Northern country of Canada in the Arctic while only four battalions, Norway organises teachings by four to five ships. So the Russian military presence is the most impressive.
